Volunteers have been working at the Voskhod Sports Complex since 10 March 2022.
‘We began by weaving camouflage nets in the gym. When the children returned to gymnastics training, the volunteers were offered the swimming pool to work in, and we moved our work there in October 2022,’ Tamara Astasheva tells me.
‘We like the big windows, the brightness. We only work during daylight hours because we don’t have enough power to light the room. We don’t use heating either. There are a few problems working like this, but we still get all our work done. We have a lot of volunteers now, working on rotation whenever they can. Some come daily, some only on weekends, and we already have our core team and have become friends. Many people also work at home; they hand weave the base for the nets, make trench candles, sew underwear for the military, knit socks, sew pillows, and much more. Everyone shares duties as they can, according to their skills. Many older people are working for us, men and women of retirement age, and young people. Our people are incredible. Our organization, E-Unity. UA, would be nothing without them.’
Diary of a Volunteer is both an exhibition and a fundraising project.
